“Drugs are tearing apart our societies, spawning crime, spreading diseases such as aids and killing our youth and our future.”

UN Secretary General Kofi Annan

The National Society on Alcohol and Drug Dependence, working alongside AA, was initially established in response to a growing need for drug and alcohol counselling, education, treatment and rehabilitation.

By the mid-1990s, NSAD had transformed itself from a funded provider to a contracted provider and to a successful business operation focusing on drug and alcohol counselling, education and rehabilitation. This led, in the late 1900s to NSAD establishing an operating company.

This is now known as Care NZ, which is responsible for the day to day commercial operations, drug and alcohol education, treatment, counselling and prevention.

A full outline of our history, including information regarding the recently published “Duty of Care” can be found on our history page.

The most recent appointment to NSAD is Judi Weir in 2005, as Chair.

Judi Weir brings with her considerable experience and knowledge of NSAD and of the field of alcohol and drug dependence and education. Her roles as former board member and Chief Executive have provided her with insight and understanding of the challenges faced by the organisation in assisting those in the community with alcohol and drug abuse problems.

She is the current Chief Executive of the Wellington SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), a position she has held since June 2003.

Judi has a Master of Business Administration and a Diploma in Social Studies. She has held a number of senior positions within New Zealand.

In her new role she is replacing long serving member and well known figure in this field and in New Zealand business, Terrence W H FitzGerald, one of the leaders in establishing the organisation.
